Yoga Breathing Techniques: Connecting Mind and Body Through Breath

Thich Nhat Hanh

Welcome

This Breathing to Be stretch series was created to help loosen me up after I've been at the computer too long. As a health practitioner utilizing Human Design analysis, I work with individuals to understand their unique paths to health. Each person is so different, and I love witnessing those light bulb moments when they realize, like I did, that their personal practice truly is personal. Incorporating yoga and breathwork into our routines brings us into present moment awareness while toning the vagus nerve, releasing fascia, and alleviating facial tension. Like many, I tend to get tense when I’m lost in thought with my creative muse. Yoga is one of the most effective self-care practices we can adopt for a healthier life. It's an ancient art that strengthens the body while also relaxing the mind. Here are just a few of my favorite easy self-care poses. While I don’t practice Ashtanga like I used to, nor teach such dynamic asana classes, not a day passes without either stretching or engaging in breathwork. I’ve found that even the simplest of postures can have magic when infused with the sacred power of the breath. May your day be filled with magic and creative flow.

Breathwork Comes in Many Forms

We don’t need to be a master of advanced asana or complex yoga poses to drop into the deepest level of our being each day. Engaging in breathwork to open our mind into a state of deep presence takes just a few breaths. Likewise, re-energizing our body-mind after sitting for long periods can be achieved through simple self-care poses. Coming into presence with our breathing may seem difficult or even too simple at first, but by surrendering, our inner world fills with ease as our body receives both opening and clearing. Just by being truly and deeply present, our body relaxes, our mind opens, and our spirit softens in the skin it's encased in.

Breathing Suites to Be

2 Breath Quick Clear

To fully benefit from this short, sharp, and sweet suite of breathwork, it's best to practice with full inward breathing through your nose and exhaling loudly through your mouth. While you can do this seated, it's most effective to stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Begin by exhaling, curling your shoulders inward and twisting your arms as well; let your head come down. Inhale deeply, lifting your head, opening your arms, pulling your shoulders back, and reaching your chest upwards. As you exhale, curl inward and down. Incorporate some self-care poses by shaking your body, including your shoulders, arms, and legs. Then, twist right and left to give yourself a full shudder, scattering all that stagnant energy. This movement is a wonderful way to enhance your yoga practice.

3 Breath Crouch, Ground & Reach

With this yoga suite, only go to where you are comfortable; this practice is not about performance, it's about presence. Begin with some breathwork, inhaling deeply as you lift your arms forward and up, connecting your hands, body, and mind. As you exhale, bend your knees and come into a squat. Inhale again, looking up with an open mind and heart, then exhale and drop your hands flat to the floor. Ground yourself, feeling your hands and feet unite for earthly strength to move through you. Inhaling, press deeply through your feet and hands into the floor, and on your exhale, lift your arms and push yourself up to standing through your feet. Inhale once more, reaching your hands to the sky while looking up, and exhale, releasing tension as your arms float back to your side. (Repeat this sequence 3x, each time incorporating self-care poses that help you relax your shoulders and jaw more and more, while extending the length of each breath.)

4 Breath Let Go Flow

Wrist, shoulders, and feet always call out for attention, don’t you think? It's not always easy to kick off our shoes and let the surf bathe us in negative ions. Given that this body of ours works so hard, it's not surprising we get a little tense. While this self-care pose doesn't help the feet (unless you take yourself down to the beach), it does aid in preventing carpal tunnel syndrome. Inhaling strongly, grasp your right wrist with your left hand, thus stabilizing the mind into the presence of both wrist joint and fingers. As you exhale, create several circles with your right wrist to release tension, and at the end of the breath, open and wriggle your fingers. Swap hands and repeat. On your second round, check to make sure your shoulders and jaw are relaxed. Closing your eyes during this breathwork exercise brings your awareness deeper into your body and helps to silence the mind, enhancing your yoga practice.

5 Breath Happy Flight

Remember the movie Hook, starring Robin Williams, when the Lost Boys remind Peter how to fly? Peter is so full of sad and unhappy thoughts that he’s forgotten how to laugh, play, and be merry. He needs to lighten up so he can fly again. This 5 breathwork suite serves as a time of remembrance for what brings us joy, spreads happy juices throughout our nervous system, and restores a pleasurable sense of lightness. Begin with your feet hip-width apart. Take hold of your upper ear tips with three fingers on the outside and thumbs on the inner lobes. On the out-breath, slowly open your elbows outwards and back, creating space for your heart to expand. On the in-breath, gently lift up on your ears. This ear stretch incorporates self-care poses based on micro movements to bring your body-mind awareness into the present moment and absolute feeling. You may notice how, as your ears lift upwards, so do the corners of your mouth. You may feel yourself smile and maybe even glow. This simple stretch calms the central nervous system and improves emotional, mental, and physical well-being. It may even bring you so much lightness you feel like you can fly. Take your time with these 5 breaths, slowing down to deepen the pause between each in-breath and out-breath.

6 Breath Twist, Stop & Sigh

This is a gentle passive slow breathing suite for balance, boundaries, and coherence, incorporating breathwork principles. Stand with your feet hip-width apart to create a solid platform for movement. Inhale as you bring your right arm up while twisting to the left. Exhale, pulling your fingers back towards you and keeping your palm flat like a stop sign. Inhale again, raising your arm upwards while twisting to the right, and exhale with a sigh, pushing stuck energy outwards through the center of your palm. Inhale and exhale as you release your hand to the side. Repeat these self-care poses with your other arm.

7 Breath Opening

Breathing deeply while lifting your hands above your head is such an easy yoga pose that people often dismiss it. However, when it comes to stiff shoulders, simple is best. Use this self-care pose to open up your rib cage and shoulder cavities. Look up into the sky and imagine a tree reaching for the light and nourishing rain, allowing your body to expand and let go as your eyes travel upwards. Pull your elbows back just a fraction and extend your chest. Practice your breathwork by breathing in and out, relaxing and dropping all tension. Feel yourself expand and slowly bring your arms back down to your sides. Repeat a few times, and if you wish to extend the pose, slide one hand over the other, reaching higher. You can also bring your palms down behind your head and pull your shoulders back further by widening the gap between your elbows. If you have a sore neck, place the tip of your tongue up on the roof of your mouth to stabilize C1 & C2. This simple stretch can show you just how tight your shoulders, neck, and chest muscles are!

You were born to bring to light your unique psychological, emotional and energetic composition. Through exploration into your distinctive makeup you can gain presence of mind to love yourself & live your truth in life, love, experience & relationships. may this be your truth.

may breath guide your way

I hope these simple yoga asanas, combined with breathwork, bring you states of rest, easy digestion, and an openness to social or creative engagement where you can practice self-care poses that allow you to be joyful, mindful, compassionate, and grounded.

Online Gathering for Alchemical Presence

To live and work within a field of coherence is to embrace paradox, a key aspect of personal growth. It asks of us to maintain presence while allowing continuous change; to know our uniqueness while dissolving our separateness through self-discovery.

It is a subtle art which requires:

  • Listening beneath words, sensing tone, rhythm, and emotional texture.
  • Honoring diversity of cognition, every perspective completes the pattern.
  • Relaxing control, trusting that when the field is stable, intelligence will emerge.
  • Staying present in tension, letting dissonance reorganise into harmony.

Through this practice, the collective becomes a field of consciousness- a living intelligence that learns, evolves, and creates from within itself.

Do you live in Auckland?

Drop Deep or Drop In

For a small closed 'drop deep' group preference of up to seven participants of a drop in casual exploration 'community' gathering, your individual needs and timing can be met. Each session is an opportunity for alchemical presence through contemplative dialogue, somatic grounding, and relational integration.

Through each segment of The Sage's Golden Path, we align with The Gene Keys principles to explore how to translate the wisdom of the Gene Keys into lived experience and language that liberates.

questions?

Step into the simplicity of your own unfolding.

My gift is catalytic clarity. I listen for what’s truly needed, then ask contemplative questions. Through the combined gifts & traits of mine, I help you see the pattern beneath the surface and reconnect with  deeper truths moving through your life.

Soul Presence

Life tends to gift us opportunities to simply be in presence to what is and not what we tend to think what is. And yet, how much of your day to day existence are you doing everything else but being in presence? Present time awareness. Present Moment. Simply being. No distractions. No matter what you are facing or doing. . .

We humans are designed to be creative forces in one way or another. The life force spirit yearns to flow, to be brought to light, to be made manifest and to be a means for mutative creative change.

Human Design & the Gene Keys are powerful tools for de-conditioning, for shapeshifting shadows and awakening within our true nature. They also provide transformational insights and skills that reshape the way you think, feel and respond within your relationships, work life, and within your own inner realms.

Would you like to ‘experience’ your unique imprinting in its many layers and levels, that you may live your design and tread your differentiation path of divine expression? Truly we are each here to be the prime architect of our own evolution, and with helpful guidance, we can.

My role is to assist you with the embodiment of our uniqueness while enhancing your awareness of aura to aura communication, energy dynamics and the conditioned (not-self) mind. The flow of each session is set to your needs and wants in the moment. I bring to you steady presence, perceptive listening, and an ability to bring clarity to what is often felt but not yet articulated.

I believe we are but a conduit for light to be embodied and here to raise the frequency of the universe through being engaged in relationships and transforming that which has been oppressed into its highest expression to support this coming great change on the planet. How we do this is unique for each us. The path I guide, is to look deep within and be in presence to old patterns of behavior and beliefs ripe for transformation.

Our genetic imprint is not fixed for through conscious choice. Our characteristics evolve, and through evolving, we raise our own frequency which emanates outwards in new ways of collaboration within our relationships, families, groups and communities.

Alchemical Presencing

Through presence, embodiment practice, conversation and contemplation, together we work to disentangle what is you from what is your conditioning or environment.

Awakening presence within is about simply being with what is rather than being caught up in what the mind has to say.

When we walk this way, presence becomes an embodied moment to moment mindful step.

Presence as A Portal to Re-Authoring

Re-Authoring the Heroine’s Story

‘In order for logic and rationality, for logos, to achieve its vision of a better world, it needs to work with mythos, the world of stories, symbols and myths.’  Useful Delusions by Shankar Vendantam and Bill Mesler

Each of us, no matter our gender, carry a mythical story that’s been told and retold until it’s forgotten it was ever alive. In the Heroine’s Mystical Path, we gather to re-author those stories. Using the language of the Gene Keys, Human Design, the gods of transits, the poetry of myth, and the precision of Meta-Coaching, we translate old neurosemantic patterns into new frequencies of presence and potent transformation.

This journey is not about becoming someone else. We sit with presence, as we each explore and re-write our stories, unraveling the seams, untangling the tangled webs, disentangling from the ties which bind, and remembering who we’ve always been beneath the stories of conditioning.

This is sacred work for those ready to live their myth in real time — to let every word, emotion, and choice become part of the art of humanity awakening.

My small group writing workshops containing story re-authoring and language alchemy, depend upon:

  • slowing down
  • watching the mind’s movements
  • listening for deeper truths
  • holding space for emergence
  • practicing self-awareness

Presence thus becomes the threshold through which a new narrative can be chosen deliberately.

"Everything I release, creates space for everything I need." Type 're-author' in the contact form.

The Venus Sequence as a practical roadmap for emotional literacy.

Is your emotional life is asking for maturity, not suppression?

As the world intensifies, emotional triggers feel sharper. Old patterns resurface. Do you want personal tools to navigate conflict, fear, sensitivity, and relational dynamics without collapsing or pushing everything away?

The Alchemy of Presence ~ A Small Group Adjunct Journey

An intimate space for attunement, integration, and alchemical presence.

A co-facilitated space where relational dynamics, shared reflection, and multiple perspectives support deeper awareness and integration through the Sage's Venus Retreat

Every two weeks, we gather in a small group to alchemise together. We begin by sensing where we are in the Golden Path, what theme is active, what key is opening, what contemplation is asking for space. From there, we drop into a guided attunement, a moment of settling the field, softening the nervous system, and aligning with the alchemical frequency of the current transmission, our Sage Lines and our unified field.

Guided by Jesse Chesnutt and Diya Welland, this Venus Retreat adjunct group offers a grounded, intimate space to deepen your Sage’s Golden Path Retreat.

Through a consistent bi-weekly rhythm, we support integration, clarity, and practical application. Two guides and the group dynamic provide layered reflection, relational insight, and multiple perspectives.

Bi-weekly calls: 19:00UTC Mondays- US$333

Please note: For Aotearoa & Australia - Tuesdays

The Venus Sequence beings June 2026

This bi-weekly cauldron of coherence is for:

  • Sincerity, subtle magic, and companionship on the path
  • Honoring threads of ancient alchemical lineages
  • Transformation as a natural process of refinement.
  • Your unfolding to be witnessed and supported
  • Stepping into the future being you are already becoming
  • A return to the simplicity of lived presence
  • Alchemy and integration of contemplative intelligence
  • Cultivating presence, coherence and emotional literacy

Through this journey, presence becomes the threshold through which new narratives can be chosen deliberately. Slowly, moment to moment, distortions of belief clear, and you remain awake inside emotional fires. Thus, you become your own anchor inside the whirlwind of changing times.

If you’re ready to explore your relational world with steadiness and depth, we invite you to join us.
